John calls bipartisan ruling victory to ensure “Voter Confidence”
April 28, 2008
INDIANAPOLIS—Marion County Republican Chairman Tom John today praised the bipartisan ruling of the United States Supreme Court to uphold Indiana’s Voter Identification Law.
“I could not be more pleased with the Court’s ruling this morning to stand by efforts to prevent voter fraud and ensure public confidence in all Indiana elections, especially those conducted here in Marion County,” John said. “We should be thankful for leaders like Secretary of State Todd Rokita and House Republican Leader Brian Bosma, who led the efforts to enact this important law and had the foresight to ensure it was even-handed, non-political, and would pass constitutional muster.”
The Court ruled 6-3 in favor of upholding Indiana’s law. Liberal Associate Justice John Paul Stevens wrote in the Court’s opinion that Indiana’s goals of modernizing elections, preventing voter fraud, and safeguarding voter confidence, were all vital goals for the photo identification requirements, which Stevens noted were in no way an undue burden upon any voter in Indiana or Marion County.
“The bipartisan majority of the Court applauded Indiana’s goal of ‘safeguarding voter confidence’ in our elections,” said John. “I implore everyone associated with elections in Marion County to heed the Court’s advice and to vigorously enforce all portions of the law, as well as to train all poll workers to do the same.”
